Our History
Moose Cree Group of Companies Limited Partnership originated in the mid 1980’s to promote economic development opportunities for the Moose Cree First Nation on Moose Factory Island. The company has since grown considerably. In the early 2000’s the company acquired a logging operation from a local logging contractor.
The company subsequently branched out into the tourism business with the acquisition of Cochrane Air Services and Kesagami Lake Lodge. Seeing the opportunity for additional growth, the company further reorganized into a limited partnership structure with its own independent Board of Directors comprised of members of the Moose Cree First Nation. The company then acquired nearly 50% of the harvesting shares from Resolute Forest Products on the Abitibi River Forest, one of the largest forests in the province. The company manages its own work force and fleet of equipment with support from local contractors.
In 2016, the company expanded into the mining industry by successfully bidding the site services contract at the Kirkland Lake Gold mine site (formerly Detour Gold). This resulted in the creation of DCS Services LP. Today, it employs approximately 50-60 employees on the site with an expanded fleet of equipment servicing both KL Gold and local contractors on site.
In line with the company’s overall strategy of diversification and expanding shareholder value, the company saw an opportunity to fulfill a niche market in the James Bay region and to reinvest in the community. The company undertook the construction of a new 40 room motel in Moosonee under the Super 8 brand. This multi-million-dollar complex offers guests modern motel facilities including Wi-Fi, continental breakfast, high speed internet etc. while employing members of the community.
Since 2013, the company has seen considerable growth and is proud of its accomplishments. The long-term vision is to seek out opportunities that allow the company to diversify, increase shareholder value, provide employment opportunities and reinvestment opportunities. The companies continues to look to new opportunities both within and outside of the region to further grow the company.
